Privacy Policy
This policy explains how FND Assist handles your personal information across our website and the FND Assist companion app.
Effective date: 25 July 2026
1. Who we are
FND Assist is a project supporting people affected by Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). We operate the website at fndassist.co.uk and are building the FND Assist companion app (together, our "services").
For the purposes of UK GDPR, FND Assist is the data controller for personal information you give us through the website (such as signup and contact details). Information you enter into the FND Assist app is stored in your own profile and is not sent to us. You can contact us at hello@fndassist.co.uk.
2. What this policy covers
This policy applies to:
- Our website at fndassist.co.uk
- The FND Assist companion app (symptom & mood journal, appointment diary, medication tracker, seizure alarm and carer call)
- Emails and messages you send us through the contact form or signup form
Links from our site to other organisations (for example charities, NHS pages or peer support groups) are governed by those organisations' own privacy policies.
3. Information we collect
Information you give us on the website
- App launch signup: your name, email address and any optional message.
- Contact form / email: your name, email and the content of your message.
- Admin accounts: login credentials for the small number of people who help maintain the site.
Information stored in the app
The FND Assist app stores your personal and health information in your own profile on your device. This includes:
- Account details (such as name and email), if you create one.
- Symptom and mood journal entries, including how you're feeling, stresses and other notes you choose to record.
- Appointments you add to your diary and any related notes.
- Medications you add, dosages and reminder times you set.
- Seizure logs and any information you add about an episode.
- Emergency or carer contacts that you choose to add so the app can call or alert them.
This information stays in your app profile and on your device. FND Assist does not receive, store or have access to it, and we cannot share it with anyone.
Information collected automatically
- Basic technical data such as device type, browser, and approximate location derived from your IP address, used to keep the service secure and working.
- Essential cookies and similar storage used to keep you signed in and remember your preferences. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
4. Health information (special category data)
Your journal entries, symptoms, mood, medication and seizure information are "special category" health data under UK GDPR. Because this information is stored only in your own app profile and is not sent to FND Assist, we do not collect or process it. You remain in control of it on your device. If you choose to back up or export your data, you are responsible for where that copy goes.
5. How we use your information
- To reply to enquiries you send us.
- To let you know when the FND Assist app is available and send launch or early-access updates you have asked for.
- To provide the features of the app: journaling, appointment reminders, medication reminders, seizure logging and the carer call / alarm feature.
- To keep our services secure, prevent misuse and fix bugs.
- To comply with our legal and regulatory obligations.
6. Legal bases (UK GDPR)
Depending on the activity, we rely on one or more of:
- Consent — for launch updates and for processing health data in the app.
- Contract — to provide the features you sign up for.
- Legitimate interests — to keep our services secure and improve them, where this does not override your rights.
- Legal obligation — where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.
- Vital interests — where safety features (such as the carer call) need to operate in an emergency.
7. Sharing your information
Information stored in the FND Assist app is not shared with FND Assist and cannot be shared by us, because we do not have access to it. It remains in your own profile on your device. The app may only contact a carer or emergency contact when you (or a safety feature you activate) choose to alert them.
For information you give us through the website, we never sell it. We share it only:
- With trusted service providers that host our website and database or send email on our behalf. These providers only process information on our instructions.
- Where we are legally required to, for example to comply with a court order or to protect someone's safety.
8. How long we keep information
- App launch signups are kept until the app has launched and for a reasonable follow-up period, then deleted or anonymised.
- Contact form messages are kept for as long as we need to deal with your enquiry.
- Information in the app stays on your device or in your personal app profile for as long as you keep it. If you uninstall the app or delete your account, that data is removed from your device. We do not keep a copy because we never receive it.
9. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Ask for a copy of the information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct information that is wrong.
- Ask us to delete your information.
- Ask us to restrict or object to how we use your information.
- Ask for your information in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent at any time where we rely on consent.
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@fndassist.co.uk. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
10. Security
Information stored in the app is protected by your device's own security (such as your passcode, biometrics or account password) and any encryption the app provides. Because this information stays on your device and is not sent to FND Assist, it is not accessible to us.
For information you give us through the website, we use encryption in transit, access controls, and row-level security on our database. No system is 100% secure, but we work hard to protect what you share with us and to respond quickly if something goes wrong.
11. Children
The FND Assist app is not intended for use by children under 13 without the involvement of a parent, guardian or carer. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information without appropriate consent, please contact us and we will remove it.
12. International transfers
Some of our service providers may process information outside the UK or European Economic Area. Where they do, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or equivalent contractual protections.
13. Cookies and similar technologies
Our website uses only cookies and local storage that are needed to make the site work — for example to keep admin users signed in. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party trackers for marketing.
14. Third-party links
Our resources and support pages link to other organisations, such as charities, the NHS and peer-support groups. Those sites have their own privacy policies and we are not responsible for how they handle your information.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of the page. For significant changes we will try to let you know by email or through the app.
16. Contact us
If you have questions about this policy or how we handle your information, email hello@fndassist.co.uk.
